Hospitalization

Why Hospitalization

In our approach to the management of headache, hospitalization allows the patient and headache team the opportunity to focus and deal with the problem in an intensive, effective way.

Breaking the cycle of intractable headache, detoxing from habituating medications, and starting preventative treatments, including intensive biofeedback training, physical medicine, individual and group therapy are accomplished during a hospital stay.

Hospitalization enables the team to get to understand and appreciate the complexities of the individuals headache problem and its impact on their lives. Patient education is an important part of inpatient treatment.

Appointments/Scheduling

While hospitalized, you will be contacted by various team members to set up appointments for testing, biofeedback, psychotherapy, physical medicine, and nutritional counseling. You will be given a folder with a schedule sheet for noting your appointments.

Please notify the team member involved if you need to reschedule an appointment.

Stress Management
bullet Biofeedback - Hospitalized patients come to once-daily sessions at the Clinic. These sessions will help you control breathing, blood flow, and muscle tension. It can also help you sleep more soundly and relax more deeply. Upon discharge, you will receive relaxation tapes so you can enhance your skills through daily practice.
bullet Psychotherapy - While hospitalized, you may be seen daily by a psychologist, who will help you identify sources of stress and help generate possible alternatives to the way you characteristically deal with stress. If you live in the area, you may choose to continue to see the psychologist as an outpatient once you have been discharged.
bullet Physical Medicine - To facilitate maximum benefit to the patients, physical medicine is offered at the hospital. Treatments may include massage ultrasound, electrical stimulation, and patients are instructed on therapeutic exercises.

Nutritional Counseling

You will be given a low tyramine, low caffeine, low preservative diet to follow, as well as the chance to consult with a licensed dietician. Please ask any questions regarding diet and nutrition.

Discharge/Follow-up

The physician will determine when you are discharged. For patients staying through Saturday morning, a biofeedback session is available.

Follow-up is done through office visits and telephone calls. Prescriptions are left with your hospital nurse. Please have you pharmacist call our office for refills.

Follow-up appointments can be made at the time of discharge.
