Chemodenervation using BOTOX®
It has been shown that diluted botulinum toxin injected into the tissues of the head and neck area results in a reduction of frequency of headaches. It is useful in people with chronic migraine as well as chronic tension-type headache. At the Houston Headache Clinic, we use chemodenervation using BOTOX®. Usually 100 units of BOTOX® are used, divided into smaller units in the muscles of the forehead, temples, occipital areas, and in the back of the neck. Depending on the severity and location of headache, the physician will determine the dose, location of injection, and the number of injection sites. BOTOX® is known to cause relaxation of the muscles and reduce the pain arising from the nerve endings in the head.
The effect of BOTOX® normally lasts for about three and a half to four months. Patients who benefit from the treatment may come back for repeat injections. BOTOX® injections are safe with no major side effects except for very slight, transient injection site discomfort. BOTOX® is not given for patients who have myasthenia gravis or are on certain types of antibiotics.
