Biofeedback
Biofeedback training is an integral part of the headache management program at the Houston Headache Clinic.
Biofeedback sessions utilize sophisticated instruments which measure and record various internal processes occurring in the body. Patients learn to "read" these signals about breathing, muscle tension, and blood flow and develop a growing awareness of their level of psychological arousal.
Over a period of sessions, patients learn strategies for reducing stress and generating the "relaxation response." Specific relaxation techniques train headache sufferers to reduce reactivity to daily stresses and encourage deep relaxation on a regular basis.
Patients must continue to develop their relaxation practice when they leave the program. They are provided with taped relaxation exercises and guidelines for cultivation an ongoing daily practice. Consistent practice is they only way to real behavioral change. Research has shown that patients trained in biofeedback and relaxation who continue their practice, report fewer headaches and decreased medication use.
A number of sessions are required to learn the technique of biofeedback. Biofeedback appointments can be scheduled by calling the Clinic at (713) 528-1916.
