Gaining Control with
Biofeedback
With the help of a biofeedback therapist using a
computer to monitor what is going on in the body, people can learn to become
aware of bodily functions that normally go unnoticed, and then can learn to gain
some control over those functions.
Biofeedback training can be thought of as another
way to stabilize the erratic brain centers responsible for chronic headaches.
The benefits are long-lasting; there are no negative side effects; and it is a
completely painless process.
The relaxation exercises affect the centers in
the brain that control circulation, blood vessels, and the level of tension in
the muscles. Instruments that monitor skin temperature and muscular tension are
used to teach the patient to relax muscles around the head and neck, reduce
blood pressure, slow the pulse, and even relax the muscles in the walls of blood
vessels.
Using biofeedback, most headache sufferers are
able to reduce the intensity or duration of their attacks by at least half. They
also feel more relaxed and able to cope with stress in daily life.

Council for Headache Education (ACHE) entitled "Why Does My Head Hurt?"
